Translation: Happy Friday and welcome to the green room! Finally as done as I can be at the moment. Used to call it “the cafeteria”, but from now on it might be “the green room”, because I totally love the colour of it! I have so much to say about this room – all the DIY´s (the marble table has already got its own post), the findings at the thrift stores, the lighting and the codes for the colours and so on. But let´s just enjoy the pictures and I will tell you all about it later, alright? And now you have the chance to ask everything you want to know about it (or something totally different), and I will off course answer everybody, that´s a golden rule of mine. Have a lovely weekend!

PS: do you remember how it used to look? I don´t… Let´s have a look here.

Wow! This is just beautiful. The deep, rich colour of the walls is so moody and evocative and the placement of the furniture is fantastic. I love how the colours complement each other. The plants add a welcome organic component. Wonderful. What a great room to sit in and drink a cup of tea and have a bite to eat.

Hi Tracy, and thanks for your lovely comment! I think the room turned out great too. I didn´t plan much, I just let it happen and just follow my heart basically. So kind of you to leave a comment, hope you keep on coming to Villa Betula 😉

    Hello there,

What a beautiful home! I’ve just stumbled upon your blog (from AHcolour instagram feed) as was looking for inspiration (actually, not really inspiration – more confirmation – I’ve already chosen a colour, but am a little frightened by it)…. and it looks very similar to your ‘green room’… would you mind telling me what colour/brand the paintwork is?
    Many thanks!
    Greg

Hi Greg! So nice to hear from you and where you found me. Is it Abi´s “Mercer Green” you got? That one is more…. green than mine, if I can say so. The one I got has a code from the NCS-system (picked it from a colour fan) and the paint I use is a very cheap Norwegian brand. I can find the code for you if you want it? But it does not have a name or a brand you can buy in other countries, sorry. I think mine is more dark and inky than the Mercer green…. did this help at all?? Let me know if you want me to get the code for you 😉 But I guess the Mercer green is lovely!

Thanks so much for the quick reply! It wasn’t Mercer green I was thinking as it looks a little bit too ‘Green’ for what I was after and was wanting that more inky, murky green… looking at it again (and it feels like I’ve been looking at greens for hours and they’re possibly all merging into one!) I think the one I’ve picked is darker… it’s ‘obsidian green’ by Little Greene…. very similar to studio green by F&B. It’s for a ‘lower ground’ floor room of the Victorian terrace we’re renovating and I’m planning to paint out everything (walls, ceiling, woodwork) in it… which will potentially make it look almost black, but it’s a north facing room so very dark already. especially as it’s partly below ground (though still has a nice bay window and semi-high ceilings)…. It’s a pretty big room and will mainly be used as a music room / cinema / study so the dark thing I’m hoping will work well – though will need pretty serious lighting and I’m thinking lots of warm metallic accents, vintage mirrors…. and tons of plants – but that should look OK! It’s pretty much the 3rd reception room so I thought we could afford to take a risk with it (we’ve knocked through on the floor above to create a big kitchen/diner/lounge – also painted very dark blue – dock blue by little greene) but it’s a light enough space to feel positively airy) and the south facing room on the lower ground will be a softer, paler green as a ‘summer room’ (card room green by f&b).

Phew! We’ve been at it (around full time jobs) for the last 15 months (was a total wreck when we bought it) and probably have another 6 months to go… I really love the colours you’ve chosen and how you’ve pulled the rooms together – such a lot of gorgeous things the eye almost doesn’t know where to start!

Keep up the good work, you’ve got yourself a new follower!

First: its lovely to have a new follower, and thanks for saying hello and telling me what you´re up to and asking questions! Make sure to follow Villa Betula on instagram as well – @villabetulablog. It sounds like a very exciting (and tiresome!) project you have had for quite som time! And I´m very curious about the fact that your green room will be partly a music room! Are you making music yourself, or will it be for listening only? Turntable? Ha ha, I´m trying to get a new fan of my band as well 😉 Well, enough about that… I remember looking at the studio green from F&B, it´s lovely. So if it looks like that it must be a good colour, go for it! And i love to hear you´re painting it all, not just the walls. And what I love to do to reflect light and create a more “seamless” feeling is to use max shine in the ceiling! Just remember to add lots of light… With lots I mean many sources with dimmed lights. Not spots, just lots of cozy vintage stuff does the job. Best of luck! Do you share photos somewhere from your house project?

Ok – I’ve just set myself up with an Instagram account and added a few pictures… I’ve been a bit reluctant to share pictures etc. so far, as it’s very much a work in progress…. And even the rooms that are ‘finished’ aren’t actually finished! Partly because as soon as paint is on the walls and we’ve put a bit of furniture in, starting on the next room (the glorious jobs of bashing walls down, repairing floors etc) feels more important than adding finishing touches…. And also because I’m not brilliant (yet at least!) on making them look amazing in the way that you, AA and the other blogs I follow do – all the ‘stuff’ that makes the rooms feel so beautiful and welcoming and interesting and finished! I’m also a pretty terrible photographer – something too I aim to fix once I have finished the house!

I’m hoping once the renovation work has been completed that I then have some time to spend fiddling, as well as touring thrift/charity shops and boot sales to find lots of wonderful items (as well as things we can bring back on from our travels etc.)… but hopefully the few snaps give you a bit of an idea… it’s been a bit of a labour of love… converting it back from what was a dentists and some flats back into a home doing almost everything ourselves in evenings and weekends! So putting it into the public domain feels a little frightening but I’m so grateful to people like yourself who provide a massive dose of inspiration that I guess I should play my part ha!
I’ve added the Instagram under the name ‘manwithahammer’ – does that allow you to find me? I’m a bit behind the times I’m afraid!
The music room will partly be for listening – but more for playing…. I’ve not picked up sticks in a while (obviously, ha) but am/was a reasonably proficient drummer – I also dabble with other instruments so it’s nice to have the luxury of space to create room for it! I shall have a listen to your music – is there a link to it on your site? I’m not sure I can find it!
            Warm regards

            Greg

I found you there! (I have just been there since this summer myself). Don´t be afraid to share “in progress” photos, that´s just interesting to see. At least I think. As long as you know what you truly like and don´t care too much for trends and so, you will be able to pull of a fab home! Thrift shopping is very much fun, but it all takes time… So just let it take time, that will make it personal and make you feel very comfy in your home. It´s like Abigail says: You never want to leave! So that´s why I also work from home, ha ha 😉 Very cool that you are a musician, and the fact that you create a room for it is like.. music in my ears! 😉 My husband I have a band called Gråblomst (@graablomst on insta, and grablomst.com, and you can find us on every streaming services and on vinyl). We are in the middle of recording our second album as I speak! Very proud to have the Bristol man Alistair Chant as a mixer this time!
